Thomas Oldknow Oldham (1856-1889)

Thomas Oldknow Oldham was my 3x Great Uncle. He was born on the 25th May 1856 in Nottingham to parents Thomas Oldknow Oldham, a lace maker, and Harriett Winfield.

In the 1861 Census he was lodging in Long Eaton with his mother Harriett & siblings, William and John.

By 1866 the family were in Calais, France. Thomas’s father was working as a tulliste in the lace factories there. This was a highly skilled role in the manufacture of lace and tulle. Thomas welcomed five new siblings during this time in Calais, Elizabeth, Enoch, Annie, Frederick and Harriett.

The family were back in Nottingham in 1871 and young Thomas, aged 15, was working as an errand boy.

In 1881 Thomas was working as a cab driver and living at 1 Cromwell Street Nottingham, with his parents and five of his younger siblings.

1 Cromwell Street Nottingham. Since the photo was taken the house has been renovated.

Sadly, Thomas died at the young age of 32 on the 19th April 1889 and was buried in Nottingham’s General Cemetery, which is actually overlooked by Cromwell Street. He shares a grave with his Grandfather William Oldham (1814-1899).
