Matilda Coope Cutts (c1820-1898)

A blog post in a my series looking at the people and families that share a connection with my late-father-in-law’s farm in Pilsley, Derbyshire

Matilda inherited the land and property (marked in red below) from her father Thomas Coope following his death in 1879.

Matilda was baptised on the 26th November 1820 in North Wingfield to single woman Elizabeth Cutts. Her middle name being Coope gives a pretty good clue to the identity of her father.1

Aged 20, in 1841 she was living with her grandfather Joseph, a farmer, mother Elizabeth and aunt Sarah in Pilsley.2

In 1851 Matilda is 30, working as a dressmaker in Pilsley and still living with her grandfather Joseph, mother Elizabeth, aunt Sarah, uncle George and farm labourer Matthew Coupe from Hardstoft, Derbyshire.3

Later that year, on 6th October, Matilda married the above mentioned Matthew Coupe in Belper, Derbyshire; their son Tom is born that same year.4

Thomas Coope, Matilda’s father, writes his Will in November 1859, leaving everything to his daughter (also the executor) and on her decease to her son, Tom Coupe.5

In 1861, still in Pilsley, Matilda is living with her husband Matthew and son Tom in the household of her father, William.6 Matilda is a housekeeper and Matthew a labourer.

In 1871, Matilda and Matthew are living together in Pilsley, Matthew is still working as a labourer.7

Matthew unfortunately dies in June 1874 and is buried at North Wingfield church.8

Matilda’s son Tom married Sarah Ann Goodall in South Normanton, Derbyshire 29th September 1873 and had a daughter Matilda Cutts Coupe on 10th July 1875, a son Thomas in 1878 and another daughter Mary, in 1890.9

Thomas Coope, Matilda’s father, died on 25th February 1879 and is buried in North Wingfield churchyard. His property passed onto Matilda. These include the field & house on Bridge Street in the map above.10

By 1881 Matilda is living in Bridge Street, Pilsley on her own; the 1881 Kelly’s Directory describes her as a farmer. In 1891 she is still on Bridge Street described as a widow living on her own means.11

Matilda dies in June 1898 and is buried at Pilsley. Her property passes to her son Tom Coupe.12
