A Jowett Burial in Basford Cemetery… Continued

Following on from my previous post on William Jowett (1853-1910) and his wife Eliza Wright I have now received the certificates I ordered from the GRO.

Their marriage record shows that they married, after Banns, on the 17th December 1870 at St Mary & All Soul’s church in Bulwell, Nottinghamshire. William was working as a twisthand and notes his father as Edmund Jowett, an engineman, which fits with my other information. Eliza’s occupation is not given and there is no father on the certificate, strongly suggesting she was illegitimate.

The second certificate was Eliza’s son’s birth certificate. John Herbert Wright was born on the 15th January 1866 in the Union Workhouse, Sheffield. Again, the father’s name is missing, so John is most likely illegitimate.

I’ve already traced William and Eliza forward through the census, so I decided to see if I could find out what happened to John. He is with his mother and William up until the 1881 census – he has moved out by the 1891 survey.

I found John living with his wife, Harriett in the 1891 census in Constance Street, Basford, Nottingham, John is a lacemaker. So I searched FreeBMD for a possible marriage and found one in the first quarter of 1889. A search on Find My Past turned up a transcription for their marriage on the 27th January 1889 at St Mary & All Souls, Bulwell, the same church where John’s mother, Eliza married William Jowett in 1870.

By the 1901 census John and Harriet have three daughters; Mildred, May and Beatrice, all born in Nottingham. William has had a change of career & is working as an insurance agent.

In 1911 the family are all together at 204 Berridge Road Central in Nottingham and John is once again working as a lacemaker. Mildred, aged 19, is a clerk at Boots the Chemist, May aged 17 is a clerk for a machine builder and 13 year old Beatrice is a mantle maker.

The trail goes a little cold from here. I’ve found a possible death for John Wright in Nottingham in 1943, but no definite entry for him in the 1939 register. There are also three possible deaths for Harriet – in 1922, 1938 and 1951. Without ordering the certificates I can’t really find out which one is correct and I don’t really want to go to that expense as they aren’t my direct line and only related to the Jowett’s by marriage.

So, it’s back to following another branch……….
