Following on from my previous post on the Bates family I have decided to fill in a couple of blanks with my more recent Bates & Philips ancestors and then to look a little further back with them before going forwards again and look for the Bates children in later census returns.
The death certificate for Mary Philips my 3x Great Grandmother reveals that she died in Nazareth House in Lenton Nottingham, where she was also resident in the 1901 census. This home provided accommodation and care for orphaned children and destitute elderly people. I have sent a request to their archivist to see if they hold any details of Mary’s time there.
Beginning to look further back for Mary – I know her father was John Philips from her marriage certificate which also reveals that John was deceased by the date of Mary’s marriage to Peter Bates in June 1839. I have found Mary’s baptism in Ropsley, Lincolnshire on Family Search, the daughter of John and Jane, but have been unable to find any other Philips baptisms in Ropsley.
I moved my search for Philips baptisms to Bitchfield, a nearby village, as Mary and Peter married there and it is customary, though not obligatory, for couples to marry in the bride’s parish. I found eight more children of John and Jane baptised there between 1820 and 1835; William, Job, Robert, Sarah, John, Susanna James and Jane. St Mary Magdelene’s church in Bitchfield is also where I found the burial of John Philips; he died in 1836.
A search for the widowed Jane & her children found them still in Bitchfield in the 1841 & 1851 & 1861 census. So I’m going to spend a bit of time piecing this family together and then move back to the Bates side I think.
